Meet Emily Mahoney
I am a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor and Board Certified Music Therapist in the State of Maryland. I have been in the mental health field for 2 years; however doing music therapy for many more. I believe that counseling works when you are motivated, committed to the process and are self-aware of your struggles. I am a white, CIS gendered female. I am an LGBTQIA+ ally and enjoy working with individuals who identify as such.
My Approach to Therapy:
I believe in the process of therapy can be reflective when you can understand what brings you here. This is why self-discorvery work can be fun and healing. My hope is that you bring topics to therapy that are important to you and we begin to explore them, connecting the pieces together. I believe that the therapy process doesn’t just happen in session but also with the work you do in between sessions, thus its important to stay motivated from week to week.
I want to help you manage the stress in your life, navigate those difficult life transitions, help you better understand yourself, and support you in making changes to your life in alignment with your values.
Establishing a trusting relationship is one of the most important aspects of therapy, and I will meet you where you are and go at your pace. I believe that you are an expert of your own experience, and I want to support you as a partner in your wellness journey.
I bring a client-centered, strengths-based approach to counseling, guided by a multicultural, integrative, and trauma-informed lens. For the past 6 years, I have worked with clients of all ages as a music therapist. Music therapy continues to influence my work as a counselor, allowing me to integrate a creative and experiential approach to traditional talk therapy. Some examples may be using musical play with young children, discovering songs that resonate with your feelings, or using the voice to explore new ways of self-expression. While using music is not a requirement of working with me, some clients may find that it enhances their experience and helps them work toward their goals.
