About Emily Mahoney

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Licensed & Board-Certified Music Therapist in the State of Maryland. I have been a counselor at Turning Stone for the past 2 years, but previously worked as a music therapist in hospice & hospital settings for many years prior. I believe that counseling works best when you are motivated, curious, committed to the process and are self-aware of your struggles.

Successful work in therapy comes from being motivated to create some change within your life. Even when you are stuck, that change can happen when you show up to therapy and explore what is keeping you there. Together we can move through those hard places and create the life you dream of.

My Approach

I want to help you manage the stress in your life, navigate difficult life transitions, help you better understand yourself, and support you in making changes to your life in alignment with your values.

My hope is that you will bring topics to therapy that are important to you, and that we can connect the pieces together as we explore them. I believe that the therapy process doesn’t just happen in session but also with the work you do in between sessions, thus it’s important to stay motivated from week to week. I enjoy receiving feedback from clients about what is and isn’t working for them so that therapy can be the best possible experience for you.

Establishing a trusting relationship is one of the most important aspects of therapy, and I will meet you where you are and go at your pace. I believe that you are an expert of your own experience, and I want to support and encourage you as a partner in your journey to a more satisfying life.

I bring a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to counseling. I am an LGBTQ+ inclusive and gender affirming therapist, and I value staying informed in these areas. As a music therapist, I often integrate a creative and experiential approach to traditional talk therapy. Music provides a soundtrack to our lives that help us to process and resonate with what we are going through, and so this can be a tool for understanding yourself on a deeper level. While using music is not a requirement of working with me, some clients may find that it enhances their experience and helps them work toward their goals.

Clients who work best with me

√ Clients who are creative, curious, and open.

√ Clients willing to take small steps because they are motivated to improve.

√ Clients who are self-aware of their struggles, can be reflective and insightful about the process.
