Helping you move towards hope in Pasadena, Maryland

Therapy for Depression can help!

Are sadness and feeling alone are taking over your world? Do you feel like you are stuck in a hole and can’t climb out? Are there times where your life’s purpose is questioned? Therapy for depression can help.
Depression can take over your life and make you feel like there is no way out. It can be hard to put one foot in front of the other. It can take hold of you and feel like its suffocating you.
The loneliness and fear that comes from your life no longer feeling like its yours can be devasting. Maybe you no longer have goals or can see your future. It all feels like an dream that once was yours.
Or maybe you are someone who doesn’t feel they are “that bad” so you are unaware of your own depression.
Sadly depression can go unrecognized because it “makes sense” that you feel low or sad about a break up or a work stressor. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms of depression because without recognizing it – it can get worse.

Some signs and symptoms that can indicate that you may be experiencing depression include:
Feeling sad or hopeless for an extended period of time
Losing interest in activities that you used to enjoy
Feeling tired or lacking energy
Having difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
Changes in appetite or weight
Feeling guilty or worthless
Greater levels of irritability and short tempered
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
Thoughts of death or suicide
If you are experiencing several of these symptoms for more than two weeks and they are impacting your daily life, you might be depressed and need support.

Why Therapy for Depression works?
Taking time to explore reasons that led to your depression and/or what may be helping to keep your depression from improving can be helpful. It’s like a car, if we don’t look under the hood, we won’t know what else may be part of the problem. And not all things can be fixed right away, some may take money or parts- much like how we treat depression.
There are strategies and coping skills that can support you while you are working through your depression. Sometimes movement and nutrition can be small steps towards improving the way you feel when you are depressed.
Learning to be more self-aware of how your depression presents for you is also important. By supporting you through exploring how it affects your thoughts, behaviors, and other experiences can lead to greater self-awareness of your depression.
Sometimes through deeper self-discovery and greater self-awareness, we find anxiety, relationship, or family issues are impacting your depression. And we can support you through addressing them individually.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does depression therapy look like?
As with most therapies, therapy will consist of you and your therapist exploring both your symptoms and underlying causes of your depression. This may be done through talk therapy, creative or expressive therapies, or nature therapy.
What types of therapies work best for depression?
We know that Behavioral Activation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Relational Therapies are the most effective.
What if I’m not motivated to do the work?
Part of the therapy process in working with depression is to address the lack of motivation. This is where Behavioral Activation can be helpful as well.
Do you recommend medication for depression?
We believe that medication is an effective treatment for depression; however we will typically spend time getting to know you and your symptoms before making those recommendations. Sometimes with the right strategies medication is not needed.
